ARMY IN NEW ZEALAND. CAME TO CALIFORNIA IN
1849. ENGAGED IN MINING AND FREIGHTING BY
PACK MULE TO THE TRINITY RIVER DIGGINGS.
AFTER SETTLING IN THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNT-
AINS IN 1850, HE BECAME LEGENDARY AS A
HUNTER, RANCHER, TEAMSTER, ROAD BUILDER,
LUMBERMAN, AND "CELESTIAL" CLAMPATRIARCH
OF MOUNTAIN CHARLIE CHAPTER No. 1850,
